Akanthomyces novoguineensis Samson & B.L Brady Tr. Br. Mycol. Soc. 79: 571 (1982)

    Teleomorph state: Not known

    Description:

Hywel-Jones, N.L. (1996) described "Specimens were found on small hunting spiders attached to the underside of living leaves of forest plants. Stroma of white mycelium completely covering the host. Synnemata white erect, numerous, simple, cylindrical, up to 9 mm high, 70-100 (-150) µm diam., sterile towards the base, hyphal strands composed of cells 6.5-11.5 x 2-3 µm. Phialides scattered, globose, hyaline, smooth-walled, 4-5.5 µm diam., each with a single distinct neck, 2-3.5 x 0.5-1 µm. Conidia catenate, one-celled, smooth-walled, hyaline cylindrical, 5.5-11 x 1-1.5 µm." Isolates on PDA were slow-growing, 10 mm in 21 d at 22 °C, and had a white, compact aerial mycelium with a pale wine red reverse. They produced short, stout synnemata with phialides and conidia and a pale wine red pigment in the agar. This species was known for a long time only from its type locality in Papua New Guinea before the first record from Thailand in 1994 (Hywel-Jones, 1996). Hsieh, Tzean & Wu (1997) reported this also from Taiwan and it has also been recorded from Japan (Hywel-Jones & Nasit unpubl. obs.) and from Queensland, Australia (Hywel-Jones unpubl. obs.). In Australia it is found regularly in numbers greater than the Thai records (Hywel-Jones unpubl. obs.). Most records have been from Khao Yai National Park with two records from Doi Inthanon National Park and from Khao Luang National Park. Collections are too few to make any conclusions on its appearance although this seems to be found throughout the wet season.
